Sony Xperia P is the latest addition to the Sony Xperia series .This mobile is particularly aimed at the middle range segment of Android smartphones and almost gives a run for money to its higher end rivals like Samsung Galaxy S2.Lets take a detailed review of its features and specs
Whats new in Xperia P ?
Nowadays we are seeing a large number of Android smartphones getting released by Samsung ,LG,HTC and Sony making it difficult for the consumers to decide which one to buy. Xperia P differs from the rest due to unique technology launched by Sony. Sony Xperia P is the first smart phone to be launched with the WhiteMagic technology .WhiteMagic technology refers to the mobile’s capability of displaying stunning outdoor visibility under sunlight. Sony claims to adding a new color “White” to the existing RGB display . In other words each pixel consists of four sub-pixels namely RGBW (Red,Green,Blue,White) making it twice bright and twice power-efficient.
Sony Xperia P comes with a 16M Colors ,LED-backlit LCD and a capacitive touchscreen .It sports a 4-inch TFT screen with 540*960 pixel resolution and 275 ppi pixel density. Multi-touch up to 4 fingers is supported. Sony’s WhiteMagic Technology,Timescape UI ,Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine makes the display a visual feast.
Sony’s WhiteMagic Technology makes display operate in two modes –outdoor and indoor .Outdoor mode allows usage of all LED lamps that provide backlight make it twice bright while in indoor mode it uses half of LED lamps making it use 50% less power.Though Sony claims to superior whitemagic technology we felt that display has poor blacks and a loss of contrast in high brightness. On most of the occasions, display looks stunning.
Processor and RAM :
Sony Xperia P is powered with a Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 processor and a NovaThor U8500 Chipset .It comes with a 1GB RAM that does a fluid multitasking,heavy-resource gaming and a smooth background tasking.
The fastness and responsiveness of Xperia P is impressive, but we felt it should have been provided with a 1.4Ghz processor as most of the phones are getting in the same segment.
Sony Xperia P comes with a 16GB internal memory where 3GB will be used up by the Operating System and 13Gb of free space is available for user. The major drawback of Xperia P is it doesn’t provide a expandable card slot which is a big letdown. We strongly feel that the lack of expandable slot is a big drawback and many consumers will feel the same in buying this handset.
Operating System :
Sony has made another wrong step without providing Android 4.0 ICS out of the box.The Xperia P comes bundled with the Android 2.3 aka gingerbread OS though Sony announced a planned upgrade in future.
Sony Xperia P comes with 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geotagging, Multi Angle shot and 1080p video recording @ 30fps with continuous auto focus and stereo sound .8X digital Zoom, front facing VGA camera for Video Calling,3D Sweep Panorama, Face and Smile Detection are other features offered by Sony.Camera is very impressive with short shutter lag, balanced color levels etc . The VGA camera is not the best of lot but serves its purpose of video calling .
It comes with a standard Lithium-ion 1305 mAh battery that provides a standby time of 470h (2G) and 475h (3G). Talktime of 6 hours in 2G and upto 5hours in 3G network and a music playback time of 80 hours doesn’t make it a desirable battery and also it is a non-removable battery so sadly swapping on the go is no longer an option.
Other features include A-GPS,HTML5 ,Adobe Flash , Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, EDR , NFC (Near-Field Communication) , microUSB v2.0, USB On-the-go support,Deep Facebook integration , WebKit web browser with Pan & zoom , Native USB tethering , Noise Suppression and HDMI Support .
Price and availability:
Sony Xperia P is available worldwide and is priced at around £340 in the UK and $490 in the US .It is priced at Rs 24,999 on flipkart in India.
The stong features of Sony Xperia P include brightest display possible till date, snappy processor, power efficient chipset and an impressive camera. The major drawbacks include lack of expandable memory card slot, No Android ICS (though planned upgrade in future ) . It gives a run for money to Samsung Galaxy S2 and is much better than Galaxy S2 in many areas and cheaper too. Apart from S2 other competitors would be Samsung Galaxy S Advance,HTC One S and HTC Sensation. At a price tag of 25k Sony Xperia P is an impressive mobile that fulfills all your needs and is the best deal for that price right now in the market.
